MORE WORKHOUSE
The Workhouse and Aberarad around 1934 after it had been taken over by Cow &
.
The first Master of the workhouse was David Davies with his wife Esther as Matron, second was his son John Richard Davies for two years then Lewis Morgan and his wife Sarah followed by the last one Henry Evans and his wife.
The number of inmates never justified the expenditure as it only averaged around 16 inmates per year. Had far more vagrants which sometimes numbered 70 in a fortnight.  Stone breaking for road building was the only work that was available for the vagrants. And they were expected to break around 6cwts of stone that passed through a grid, for their board and lodging. Ones who did not conform were taken before the magistrate and usually incarcerated in Carmarthen Jail for 14 days hard labour. The House closed in 1915 and the inmates were transferred to the Cardigan Institution.
In 1918, two local men, Tom Davies, Bronwyon, Beulah and Jones Penwenallt rented some of the house to start making cheese. This was short lived as they went bankrupt around 1924.
Cow & Gate came in 1931 and started making cheese around 1934. They sold out to MMB in 1979. They closed down in 1983. Goats cheese was made for a while. Then Dansco took over in 1989 making mozzarella cheese. It is now owned by Saputo who are still making mozzarella cheese.
