Holy Trinity Church around 1890
A list of Vicars in the Church
The new Church was consecrated by Bishop
Thirwall on September 18th 1842 and on June
10th 1843 it was elevated to the dignity of a
Parish Church and a Parish assigned to it by
order	in	Council,	town,	hamlet	and	Dolbryn
hamlet all in the old Parish of Cenarth and the
Manor	and	Borough	of	Adpar	of	Lower
Llandyfriog in Cardiganshire.  It is often said
that	those	who	built	the	Church	in	1842
committed	a	great	blunder	by	trusting	the
building	of	the	edifice	to	an	untrained	local
architect. This was a tradition believed by most
people in Newcastle Emlyn. In 1925 however a
copy of a bill came to light which showed a sum
of £51:16shillings paid to a Mr Colland  for
plans	and	superintending. Whoever	this
gentleman was, he was not the local genius of
the tradition.  Sad to say though the material
used in the construction of the Church was the
best of its kind and though the masonry and
woodwork	have	been	pronounced	excellent
there were some serious miscalculations in the
structure, weak and comparatively lofty walls
supporting too wide a nave span was one of
them. Whatever the fault the factor remains by
the time of the second incumbent the Rev W
Powell it was declared to be in a dangerous
condition. It is now believed that had it not been
for the extraordinary amount of memel wood in
the roof and the skilful manner in which it had
been	put	together	the	whole	structure	would
have collapsed long ago. As it was the east wall
was	found	to	be	completely	shattered. The
upper part of the tower had moved and large
cracks had appeared in it, portions fell away and
the heavy battlements had to be taken down.
