The River Teify meanders around the town of Newcastle Emlyn and forms a natural moat on three sides of the ruined castle. It flows from Tregaron to Cardigan where it meets Cardigan Bay and the Irish Sea.
Its power has been harnessed over the years to drive Woollen Mills and Corn Mills.
